The Amazing Legend of Kyaiktiyo Pagoda

The Amazing Legend of Kyaiktiyo Pagoda

Myanmar has many remarkable and legendary places all over the country, one of that is Kyaiktiyo Pagoda. This place located in Kyaiktiyo, you can reach that place in about a few hours drive from Yangon to the East. Beside the amazing structure of the pagoda itself and the magnificent scenery that surrounded this place, Kyaiktiyo Pagoda is also a sacred place for Buddhist.

If you look at  this place, you gonna stunned by its magnificent structure. We also impressed by the structure, the reason is because the structure is not only fascinating but it also generates a magnificent energy.

If you like to visit a legendary place in Asia, a trip to this place might be a really good option. We gonna give you some more reason on that, so let’s take a short tour on this place.

Kyaikhtiyo Pagoda known to the world as Golden Rock is in the area of ancient kingdom of Suvannabhumi, meaning the golden land. This small 18-foot-high pagoda is built on a gilded boulder 25 meters in circumference balanced in what appears to be a very precarious position on a tabular rock jutting out from the Paung-laung ridge of the Eastern Yoma mountains. Lies 1,100 m above sea-level, 180 km from Yangon (approx 6 hours) by private minivan to the to the base camp call Kinponsakan, from here an upper staging point, the journey made in open truck on a recently built road from the base camp to the top of Rathedaung.

Kyaiktiyo Pagoda is a 7.3m high stupa, built on top of a gold-leaf covered rock, clinging precariously to the top of a mountain, held on only by a strand of Buddha’s hair.

Like the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon or the Mahamuni Paya in Mandalay this is one of the most sacred sites in Myanmar.

Reaching the top of the mountain, the first view is of the Golden Rock balancing on the edge of a precipice. Approaching the rock there are steps down to a walkway round the plinth and the area directly below the rock was filled with candle-holding worshippers.

Despite being overcast when we visited the sun still managed to reach the gold coated boulder and make it shine. The mist repeatedly rolled over the top of the mountain, giving the whole place a dream-like quality.

The Buddha, on one of his many visits, gave a strand of hair to a hermit, who in turn took it to his king. The hermit requested that the hair be enshrined under a boulder the same shape as the hermits head. (The name Kyaik-htiyo means “Pagoda on a Hermit’s Head.”)

The king was the offspring of an alchemist and a serpent dragon (naga). He found the head-shaped rock at the bottom of the sea and raised it to the peak at Kyaiktiyo. The rock was kept in place by the hair, even after the addition of a 7.3m high golden pagoda.

There is an alternative legend that the rock hovers in the air above the cliff. When the Golden Rock was originally positioned there was enough space for a chicken to walk under the rock. Over time it sank to the point that only a sparrow could squeeze into the gap. Now the gap is still there, but is too small to be seen. Fair enough.

Located 180km south of Yangon in the town of same name, Kyaiktiyo is regarded as one of sacred sites that any devout Myanmar must visit once in their lifetime. The rock itself is 5.5 metres high and is topped by a small pagoda or zedi. It is covered in gold leaf and, like any other Buddhist monument in Myanmar, contains a hair relic of Buddha Gautama.

Any geologist will explain the Kyaiktiyo phenomenon as a volcanic accident, but to the local people this is a work of the force that is larger than life, a miracle of Buddha himself that keeps the rock up. Legend relates the story of a yogi who, after having been given a hair strand of the Buddha, was looking for a stupa to contain it. As he lived in the wild, this proved almost impossible. The task was taken over by Indra, the supreme Hindu god, who found a suitable rock under the ocean and deposited it on Paung Laung hill.

Kyaiktiyo Pagoda is located in a town of the same name, 180km east of Yangon. A 4-5 hour car journey will take you to the Kinpun base camp where visitors ride in a small open top truck along the windy road a further eight kilometres (it takes about 30 minutes). From here, either hike up another two kilometres (about 45 minutes), or ride a sedan chair, which should cost about US$ 25 one way.

As this is quite a long journey, this is probably not a day-trip outing. Spend a night in one of the agreeable hotels up in the hills so you can soak up the atmosphere while watching worshippers come and go. The view at the top is spectacular, especially at sunrise or sunset.

Opening Hours: All year round, best time to visit is in the dry season from October to April
Location: Kyaikto in Mon State, 180km east of Yangon, via Bago
Tour Available: 2 Days Golden Rock Pagoda Tour
